For preparatory work over large areas, heavy vehicle guidance offers extreme precision and better productivity, and also eliminates most human error. Groupe Giroux uses this technology among other things for operations on highways and in shopping malls.
Heavy vehicle guidance consists in incorporating the proposed survey plans for a project into a total robotic station. The receiver, positioned on the heavy vehicle (a bulldozer, mechanical shovel or leveller), transmits the information to the total station, which is aware at all times of the exact position of the machine to be controlled. The total station transmits operations at a frequency of 50 times per second. This enables the operator to immediately apply any corrections that may be required. The operator has instant access to the altimetry, elevations, surfaces and theoretical alignments, and to a plan view of the site, the vehicle's position, and any necessary blade angle and altitude changes. The system is easy to use, and is accurate to between 1 and 2 cm.
